A Comparative Study of Medical Students' Achievement in Mahidol University Selected by the Promotion of Medical Education for Rural Populace Programme and the State University Bureau

Abstract


     This study attempted to compare medical students' achievement in Mahidol University, selected by the Promotion of Medical Education for Rural Populace Programme and the State University Bureau. The sample for analyzing academic achievement, consisting of 5 groups during the academic year 1975-1979, and non-academic achievement, consisting of 284 students in the academic year 1985, were selected by matched-pairs in year level, sex and age one by one. The questionnaire was administered to collect the non-academic achievement. The data were analyzed by the analysis of variance. The findings revealed that rural students gained a grade point average lower than urban students significantly at .01, both at the Faculties of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital and Ramathibodi Hospital. The retardation ratio of rural students was significantly higher than urban students, and to be higher than only the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital. Graduation ratio, drop-out ratio and attitudes of the two groups were not significantly different.
