Author Guidelines

Manuscript should be presented in the following order:

Title page: The title page should contain the following:
● Title of the paper.
● A short running head (no more than 50 characters, including spaces).
● Type of manuscript (e.g. Original Article, Review Article, Letter to the Editor, Editorial, Special Issue).
● Full names of the all authors with the highest academic degree.
● Addresses of the institutions at which the work was carried out.
● E-mail address, plus facsimile and telephone numbers, of the author to whom correspondence about the manuscript, proofs and requests for offprint should be sent.
● Conflict of interest statement.
● ORCID ID of all authors.
● Certification of proof reading English.
● Total word count (text only; excluding abstract, tables, and figure legends). The title should be short (less than 80 characters, including spaces), informative and contain major keywords.

Abstract: An abstract, no longer than 250 words or less, is submitted as required for regular articles. The abstract should state the Objective, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusion, each with a brief adequate presentation.
Original Article: The manuscript must be written in English with no longer than 3,500 words for the text, including abstract, acknowledgments, references, and figure legends. Tables and figures/ illustrations should not exceed 6 in total.
Review Article: No longer than 4,500 words for the text, including abstract, acknowledgments, references, and legends for illustrations (figure legends). Tables and illustrations should not exceed 8 in total.
Letter to the Editor: No longer than 250 words. Only one table or illustration is permitted. An exception can be allowed by the Editor-in-Chief when appropriate. Correspondence letter will be sent to the corresponding author of the original article for the reply.
Editorial: Usually no longer than 1,500 words. An exception can be allowed by the Editor-in-Chief when appropriate.
Special Issue: Usually no longer than 3,000 words. An exception can be allowed by the Editor-in-Chief when appropriate. Tables and illustrations should not exceed 6 in total.
References: The Vancouver system of referencing should be used. References should be cited numerically in the order they appear in the text. Identify references in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses or as superscripts. Please give names of all authors and editors. In the reference list, the references should be numbered and listed in order of appearance in the text.

Cite the names of all authors when there are six or fewer; when there are seven or more, list the first six followed by “et al”. Names of journals should be abbreviated in the style used in Index Medicus (see examples below). Reference to unpublished data and personal communications should not appear in the list but should be cited in the text only (e.g. A Smith, unpubl. Data, 2000).

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. A cover letter that the manuscript is submitted to SMJ only, it has never been published elsewhere in English or other languages, and it has been approved by all authors.

  2. All manuscripts must be submitted online at www.smj.si.mahidol.ac.th.  This website provides step-by-step instructions for manuscript submission as well as a tutorial for authors.

  3. Illustrations should be saved at the highest resolution setting and sized no larger than 800 kB per file as possible. 

    Figure images should be provided in JPEG or TIF format. Graphics software such as Photoshop and Illustrator (not presentation software such as PowerPoint, CorelDraw, or Harvard Graphics) should be used to create the figures.

  4. IRB approval, coi disclosure, consent form and clinical trial registration are required. Please include this information with your submission.

  5. Articles must be checked for potential plagiarism with Turnitin.

  6. Author-suggested reviewers
    Authors can suggest two or better four the names of different institutions reviewers in the cover letter. Provide the following information: name, affiliation and contact email.

As an open access journal, the journal has neither article submission charges nor article processing charges. All cost related to the publication of the journal will be covered by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University.
